  1. The primary activity in science, a
  2. combination of theory and experimentation
  3. directed towards finding scientific
  4. explanations of phenomena. It is commonly
  5. classified into two types: pure research,
  6. involving theories with little apparent
  7. relevance to human concerns; and applied
  8. research, concerned with finding solutions to
  9. problems of social importance - for instance
  10. in medicine and engineering. The two types
  11. are linked in that theories developed from
  12. pure research may eventually be found to be
  13. of great value to society. Scientific
  14. research is most often funded by government
  15. and industry, and so a nation's wealth and
  16. priorities are likely to have a strong
  17. influence on the kind of work undertaken.
